THE STORY BEHIND THE MATERIAL
Boz Publications Ltd worked closely with our printing partner, Biddles Ltd, to construct an ecosystem of materials and processes that mirrored Andy’s call for a healthy society.
Our aim was to use sustainable products and consider the economic models, companies, and production processes that contribute to what a healthy society could look like in the world of book publication.
We went into this project aware that it was a work in progress. The lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the practical business models still to be articulated are all part of a continuing story.
This edition is one chapter in the ongoing storyline of a healthy society in this industry.

Paper is important
Our Munken Print White paper choice focuses on quality, feel, and authentic sustainability.

Munken Print White combines the best properties of woodfree and wood-containing paper.
It is an uncoated paper, which helps with the feel of the page.
Uncoated papers are a good environmental choice due to their high percentage yield of fiber for recycling

Font-thinking
Choosing the font and its size communicates unspoken messages.

The choice of a typeface matters because it stimulates the emotions of the reader and is the entry point (or lens) of how the reader engages with the book. This can have a positive or negative impact.
You could say that choosing a font is an art form.

There are three main typefaces,
Serif font
Sans Serif
Script Font.
Considering the message of Sick Society and the easy-to-read writing style, we chose a Sans Serif typeface due to its welcoming feel and accessibility.
Our specific font choice focused on ensuring it catered for as many reading abilities as possible.
This was also reflected in our main font size. We went 2 points higher than traditional approaches to help varied reading abilities navigate through text-heavy pages.
Sewn Binding
A process that focuses on durable and quality.

Sewn binding is an advanced binding method that gathers a group of pages together into a block, sewn, and then glued.

This type of method ensures a better hold over time and greater resistance to wear than perfect (glued) binding.
Pages shouldn’t fall out as they are sewn together in groups.
Due to its durable and high quality, the binding will stay together as long as the pages last, meaning the book carries a longer shelf life.
Climate Partner
The journey of a book beyond the page.

Climate Partner is an organisation that helps their partners calculate and reduce their carbon emissions and finance climate projects.
Each ClimatePartner certified label of a product shows the calculated emissions, the relevant reduction measures and any supported climate projects associated with the work.
